We have consistently been at or near the top of our school board with respect to the OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test) scores; the pass percentage for the 2019 calendar year was 92.8%. The most recent Fraser Institute School Rankings place St. Thomas of Villanova as 27th out of 739 schools throughout the province. Your children will be receiving the proper attention that they require to be successful in both secondary and post-secondary studies.

What are the three streams of English that my son/daughter can choose from in high school?

In Grade 9, students have the opportunity to select a Locally Developed English course <ENG 1L>, an Applied English course <ENG 1P>, or an Academic English course <ENG 1D>. The ‘Locally Developed’ course is designed to help provide students with the skill set necessary to move forward into the world of work. The ‘Applied’ course is designed to help provide students with the skill set necessary to pursue college course work. The ‘Academic’ course is designed to help provide students with the skill set necessary to pursue university course work. The course codes are consistent for Grades 9 and 10; however, once students move into Grade 11 and Grade 12, the codes change. For example, the ‘Locally Developed’ English course becomes the ‘Essential’ English course <ENG 3E, and ENG 4E>. The ‘Applied’ English course becomes the ‘College’ course <ENG 3C, and ENG 4C>. The ‘Academic’ English course becomes the ‘University’ course <ENG 3U, and ENG 4U>.

Will my son or daughter be able to move into a different English stream?

 Each English stream covers skills that are practical/suitable for a student’s progress after leaving high school. Having said that, if a student feels that he/she could perform at a different level, he/she will be provided the opportunity assuming that any necessary prerequisites are addressed. In other words, students will always have the opportunity to move across streams assuming the commitment, desire, dedication, and work ethic are in keeping with the changes that a different stream presents. It is only sensible to consider that if a significant change were to take place, the student may be required to spend additional time in the high school setting. I always encourage students and parents to consider all of the potential means of making a stream change feasible/possible. Am I able to attend a night school class, an online class, a summer school class, or factor extra time at my school? If the answer is yes to one or all of these questions, then a stream change can certainly occur.

How different is the curriculum in a high school English classroom?

The main difference in any high school subject (especially English) is the fact that the student will be exposed to more information at a much faster pace. In a typical, English class <Grade 9 – Grade 12>, students will cover approximately 6 units of study throughout the semester (each unit will last for approx. 3 weeks). The key components to consider are that students have to maintain their focus, intensity, and commitment throughout the entirety of the semester. The greatest jump for most students entering a high school English class will be reading, studying, and analyzing group texts (novels, short stories, poetry, and plays). Also, for most students, they will be introduced (for the first time) to the plays of William Shakespeare – an awesome experience (I am a bit biased in my view concerning this topic).
